VEETech conducted the removal, cleaning, disposal, and closure activities for four Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Atlanta, Georgia. This project included excavation, removal, cleaning, and disposal of two 15,000-gallon USTs previously used to store heating oil, one 4,000-gallon UST previously used to store used oil, and one 550-gallon UST used to store fuel oil in accordance with applicable federal, state, local, and Navy requirements. Pre-closure actions included preparation and submittal of the required work plans to the state agency, contacting the local Fire Marshal, notification of the base Utilities Protection Center, and review of existing utilities maps. The USTs were cleaned using a Mirachem solution and triple-rinsed until Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) readings were within the acceptable range. Liquids generated during UST cleaning were removed using a vacuum truck and transported to a licensed off-site facility for disposal. Excavated soils were screened using a Photo-Ionization Detector (PID) to evaluate disposal requirements, and soil samples were collected from the floors of the excavations to ensure adequate removal.
